State of the Game #265: Post Release Bliss

Oh, what a beautiful week! Last week saw the release of the February update and a quick hotfix for some minor issues. This week, I have been gathering a lot of data on the new heat system and working on more and more secretive projects!

One of the most fun and interesting things I have added to the game has got to be the special pink firework key code. While this started as a single key, it is self replicating! This means, once one person has redeemed the key, they can pass it on to a friend to do the same thing. This only works as long as each person passes it along!

In a way, this was a bit of a social experiment. Would the winner pass the key along at all? Each time it’s passed along, the ‘rarity’ of it decreases. I also was curious how people would facilitate the passing of the key. So far, the key has been passed along 9 times. My initial expectations were that the key would fall into obscurity once it passed through ~5 people, but my expectations have already been exceeded! It will be interesting to watch as it grows and continues along. The end hope is that it becomes part of the MAV experience and players that stumble across it months from now will feel how special the event is, it having been connected in a continuous line through the player base!

For development progress, I have begun merging my ‘long term’ experimental code base in with my latest deployed code base. This is not the first time I have tried merging code like this in Unity, but last time it did not have great results. My hope is that this time will be a resounding success.

I have also been looking into fixing some long term issues with the website. I had some members of my QA department go through the website process and was able to get detailed notes on user experience issues that need to be addressed. If you see some updates in the near future, this is why!

On the business side of things, I have started emailing people and lining things up for PAX East! I will be attending PAX East this year, so if you are going to be there, let me know! I will be bringing lots of stickers and business cards with me, so stop by and get some cool swag!

That’s all for this week!

  1. I’ll admit, I rarely get the chance to play (stupid adulthood), but I love seeing these updates and knowing that I’ll see something new everytime I do play. Keep up the great work!

  2. Every time you say “QA department” the mental image I get is you nagging your wife to sit down and go over the game or site looking for things she thinks are off. That poor woman.
